Lessons for children and young people

My clarinet lessons are fun and motivational for children and young people.

Learning a musical instrument as a child can be an enriching experience – and should be enjoyable too.

To make good progress, of course, students will be expected to practise regularly between lessons – otherwise progress tends to be very limited! Repertoire is chosen so that everyone can play the music that is the best for them and there is a wonderfully wide range of music to choose from in many styles! Students are encouraged to play with others as much as they can in whatever context suits their needs the best.

Tracking progress

Students may choose to work towards music exams, (ABRSM Performance/Practical Grades or Trinity College) as appropriate to their standard and needs. They may also need to prepare performances for GCSE and A level work and if appropriate, recordings can be made during lessons.

Exams, however, are by no means essential and not a requirement – students can obviously learn just for the sheer enjoyment of playing.

I am always willing to provide verbal updates to parents on the progress their children are making. For younger children, parents may wish to sit in lessons – at least initially, depending on what works best for the child.

Music Theory

I teach music theory alongside the practical skills to help students understand how the music works.
